YES CLIENT OF THE MONTH: CLAIRE KENWAY

Claire playing live, as a part of ‘SWACK’ at EM15 (ELEKTRA/MUTEK 2014).
Claire Kenway’s musical education began at an early age, through her mother who was a violinist and father, a physicist-inventor. Playing violin from age five onwards, she was later drawn to the 'punk rock' aesthetic and that of the bass guitar.

At age 14, Claire began hearing about raves and club culture on CBC’s radio show 'Quirks and Quarks'. Intrigued, she attended her first all-night dance event and three years later, while studying theatre at Acadia University, Claire witnessed a unique experience at the time: a female DJ. She then realized DJing was more than just a keen interest and while working towards financing her university tuition, she unexpectedly bought a pair of turntables and a mixer from a music store. After a year and a half of practicing and perfecting, she gave a demo recording to some friends and i
n January 2002, Claire landed her first DJ gig.

DJing had become a part of life for Claire - around the Maritimes, Toronto, New York, BC and everywhere she traveled. After moving to Montreal in 2008, Claire got her first residency at Laïka, a local media & arts hotspot. A fellow musician and roommate pushed her to compose and produce her own music and in 2012, a friend offered her a recording deal which saw her first album, “Under a Midnight Moon” launched on local musical impresario Pheek’s record label Archipel. Subsequently, her recordings and DJ sets having amassed a 'minimal techno' cult following both locally and abroad.

Counseled by YES Montreal coach Monika Majewski, Claire began to focus specifically on production and other aspects of her musical career.

"My one-on-one coaching sessions with Monika have helped me to identify my goals and prioritize my focus,” Claire says. “Monika has helped me to set my sights squarely on seizing international opportunities and implementing strategic planning to maximize my future success."

She will begin the month of September with a tour in Europe and then she will return to Montreal on September 19th, to play Bacchanale’s festival Ancient Future in Old Montreal. You can catch Claire at Metro Mont Royal on August 28th from 9:30-11 PM, or at
Laïka on Fridays, where she continues to hold down her weekly residency.
