YES RECEIVES FUNDS TO HELP ADVANCE GENDER EQUALITY IN QUEBEC

The Honourable Maryam Monsef, P.C., M.P., Minister of Status of Women, announced earlier this month that $18 million dollars will be invested by the Government of Canada to advance gender equality. $2.5 million in funding has been granted to seven projects that will challenge barriers to gender equality in Montréal and the province of Quebec.

YES is very excited to be a part of this intiative and will use the funds to improve the retention and advancement of women in STEM industries in Montréal.

"Through this partnership with the Government of Canada, we will be working to improve the retention and advancement of women in STEM industries in Montréal by bringing about systemic changes in a number of workplaces. We will also enhance the value of this project by sharing best practices, success stories, and model corporations to foster systemic changes in more STEM workplaces in the future." Iris Unger (Executive Director, YES).

HAVE A GREAT BUSINESS IDEA BUT NEED HELP DRAFTING A BUSINESS PLAN?

The undergraduate Entrepreneurship course at John Molson School of Business works with real entrepreneurs who are about to start a business or are already operating businesses in the Montreal region.

How does it Work?
• Submit a brief document (1-2 pages) about your business idea. This is then placed in the JMSB intranet system and made available to student groups. The student groups select projects they want to work on and prepare a business plan for completion at the end of the semester.

How do I submit my idea?
• You should write a one page summary as follows: one paragraph describing the idea (product, service, and customers), one paragraph about yourself as an entrepreneur, one paragraph outlining where you are at in terms of development.
• Submissions should be made in Microsoft Word or PDF and sent to Anna Viegas, Entrepreneurship Program Administrator, at aviegas@yesmontreal.ca by Friday, September 8 at 9:00 am.

GOOD LUCK!

LEARN HOW MICHAEL GOOCH LANDED A JOB WITH THE HELP OF YES

Michael Gooch arrived here with little more than a duffle bag and a top hat, ready to take his first serious steps towards navigating the job market in Montreal.  After merely three days on his own, he sauntered into YES to tackle the challenges that lay ahead.  Armed with an educational background in Psychology and Film from the University of Manitoba and a venturous stint in the United Kingdom, he wanted to take a stab at breaking into the competitive game development industry; a lifelong dream that he knew was not going to fulfill itself.

He used the valuable information that he got during his one-to-one consultations with YES’s staff to his advantage and updated his long-neglected LinkedIn profile so that it looked sharp.  “YES really provided the support and resources needed to give me that competitive edge”, says Michael.  “They also tolerated a lot of my bickering, so that’s a boon”.
After many failed interviews, sweaty handshakes and applications that got lost in the void, an opportunity opened at a well-known studio.  “My willingness to learn and grow is what got me through that door, but I couldn’t have done it without the support of the many talented individuals that work at YES, especially my job counsellor who helped keep me sane through this emotional rollercoaster.”

This is only the start of his journey, and the skills he learned from YES will help carry him further into his career.
