Special statement from YES’ Executive Director, Aki Tchitacov

To the YES community,

Black Lives Matter.

This is inalienable for an organization like YES, founded on principles of inclusion and opportunity for all.

The current surge of activism and support for anti-racism work and change is welcome. I am hopeful that the dialogue that it has brought out in our country, in our homes, and in our organization itself, will help to bring about real change and equality.

Statistics have shown that the Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (BIPOC) community of Quebec has not been able to access the job market to the same extent as other communities and that the employment rate is further diminished for the English-speaking populations in these communities. The latest census shows us that, regardless of education level, the rate of unemployment for visible minorities in Montreal was roughly double that of non-visible minorities.

There are systemic barriers to equal employment opportunities in Quebec and Canada that need to be addressed. In keeping with our values, YES is committed to working toward creating more equitable futures for all here in Quebec and to being a better ally to organizations in the BIPOC community.

We strive to offer lasting pathways to jobs and business start-ups for the diverse communities that come to us for help.

Let us continue to work together to ensure that this reaffirmation is a movement, not a moment.

Respectfully,

Aki Tchitacov

WE'RE CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF IMPACT!

In an online event recognizing the founders of our organization and celebrating YES' 25 years of helping

The results speak to the integrity, care and passion that our supporters have shared
in building YES over the past quarter century:

YES is providing entrepreneurs with the guidance, knowledge and resources they need to help them navigate the economic shutdown, while also working with job seekers who are looking for stable employment or reconsidering their career paths within the context of the new reality. MEET TUBA KAYA AND FIND OUT HOW YES HELPED HER FIND A JOB

Tuba Kaya studied English Language and Literature in Istanbul, Turkey where she worked as an English-Turkish Translator and Editor for 7 years and later, as a Digital Content Executive for 4 years in Dubai, UAE, before moving to Montreal in 2019. After working as a Project Manager for a few months, she decided to take a break and focus on defining a new career path that would let her achieve her professional goals.

“Being new to Canada, I needed support and guidance because I was unsure about how to proceed in a new job market,” Tuba says. “I felt lucky to have been introduced to YES as they helped me connect with people who were in a similar situation as me.”

For Tuba, the YES workshops and discussion groups she attended were a catalyst in helping her build a diverse network of connections in a city and country that she was new to.
At the same time, she was also experiencing as many others are, the many unprecedented challenges and obstacles associated with the pandemic.

“During my job search process, there were ups and downs in terms of motivation and keeping positive,” she says. “Especially with the start of the pandemic, there were days I was overcome with anxiety about finding a job.” However, her search didn’t last long. With her YES Job Counsellor’s help, Tuba gained confidence as a job-seeker, identified her priorities and goals and two months later, began her new job as an English Language QA Tester at a local gaming company.

“I’ve already taken other roles and responsibilities on, such as functional QA testing and recruitment support,” Tuba says. “Instead of basing my career choice on starting salary or other perks, I’m now focusing on what I actually enjoy doing and I couldn’t be happier! Thank you YES!”
