BUSINESS SKILLS FOR CREATIVE SOULS CONFERENCE & ART EXPO RECAP

Earlier this month, YES held two events - the YES Art Expo and the 13th Annual YES Artists' Conference: Business Skills for Creative Souls, running in tangent at Marché Bonsecours over the course of two days.  Event organizers are pleased to report that over 1,500 people perused and purchased art over the two-day span at the YES Art Expo, as well the Artists' Conference was at full capacity on Monday. We here at YES would like to thank the following for their invaluable contribution to making these two annual events inspiring and illuminating:  the 60+ artists who displayed at the expo, the speakers including - David Usher, Julie Armstrong-Boileau from Moment Factory, Jennifer Gasoi, John Kobel who relayed their inspiring life experiences and CBC's Sonali Karnick who moderated the event, our funders The Counselling Foundation, Canadian Heritage, Forum jeunesse de l'île de Montréal (FJÎM), Peacock Family Foundation and media sponsor CultMTL. We would also like to thank the Planning Committee, headed by Linda Rutenberg with Elizabeth Ulin, Lori Schubert, Andrew Chen, Crystal Chan, Norma Andreu, Damian Siqueiros, Marc-Andre Castagner, Matthew Stern, Aria Campbell-Kelly, Guy Rodgers, Ezra Soiferman, Jane Needles and Chris ‘Zeke’ Hand See you all again in 2014!

YES CLIENT OF THE MONTH: KYRA SHAUGHNESSY

At the young age of 25, Kyra Shaughnessy had already been performing her original poetry and music for almost a decade. With lyrics inspired by nature  and social justice issues, her music has a jazzy  folk/gospel edge that keeps listeners coming back for more. After several years of touring with her first self-titled album, she recently released her second full-length album, Waiting for the Light.

Kyra began attending Artist Coaching sessions with Monika Majewski in the beginning of 2013. She recently won 1st place after applying for the YES Artistic Project Plan grant and will be producing a professional quality music video for her song  ‘Loving Like Breathing’ from her latest album.

“The YES Artist Program has been incredibly helpful to me in supporting my career development as an independent artist and receiving the YES Artistic Project grant will allow me to really step up a notch by producing a professional music video, something I’ve been wanting to do for quite a while…” Kyra says.

This coming August, Kyra will begin a ten-month program for singer-songwriters with l’École Nationale de la Chanson in Granby. Together with a group of 14 other experienced singer-songwriters, she will be immersed in full–time classes aimed at honing the craft of performance and composition. You can listen to Kyra’s music and find information on her many upcoming performances, video releases and more on her website, www.kyras.net.
