LOOKING TO GET YOUR ARTS CAREER OFF THE GROUND? WE CAN HELP!

MEET CLAUDIA ROMERO AND FIND OUT HOW YES HELPED TURN HER PASSION INTO HER CAREER

Claudia Romero is a Mexican-Russian visual artist and cat lover. She began her journey in the arts at the age of 13, when she lived in Mexico, building her skillset with Graphic Design and Photography classes. She holds a BFA in Graphic Design with a major in Photography and has over two decades of corporate and non-profit experience.

“When I came to Montreal
with my visual arts portfolio 18 years ago, I wasn’t able to find a job in my creative field,” Claudia says. “This led me to work as an administrative assistant and event coordinator for a while, where I could only occasionally use my photographic skills. I ended up doing a career in the field of fundraising (in Healthcare) for 13 years.”

“Last year, I took several courses at YES to become an entrepreneur and after a year of deciding whether I should continue with another 9-5 job, I decided it was finally time to put the love of photography in action as my main source of income.” she says.

At first, Claudia hit some snags in her transition to the arts. “It was hard to give most of my work for free to gain experience and get known, but it paid off,” she says. “The best part has been meeting so many new faces and places. On the other hand, I’ve crossed paths with people who see me as a threat and have criticized my work.”

Claudia strongly believes that being an entrepreneur has taught her to have a thick skin. Her motto is to go with the flow. “Some days all is wonderful, others not so much, but it doesn’t matter, you have to keep moving forward.” she says.

For Claudia, the YES Artist Coaching Services, namely the one-on-one appointments, have been a game-changer because they represent the artistic touch that she was lacking, as well as the encouragement and guidance to pinpoint and refine the steps she needed to follow in order to reach her goals. "My coach helps me to focus on my core strengths,” she says.  “At the beginning, you want to do just about anything to get a contract, but at some point you need to find a specific market to tackle and deliver the best possible service. YES gave me the focus I needed. Thanks a bunch YES!”
