ENTREPRENEURSHIP SPEAKER SERIES: ELLEVATING WOMEN IN BUSINESS

This is an invitation for women and men to join a community of strong, resourceful and focused women entrepreneurs
who will speak to the challenges and opportunities for business growth within the Quebec entrepreneurial ecosystem
in a dynamic panel discussion.

We’ll also give you a sneak peek into ELLEvate, an exciting new program recently launched at YES aiming to help over 1,000 women entrepreneurs across Quebec over the next 3.5 years. You’ll also be the first to get access to our new STEM Platform, a website housing helpful tools and resources that support the Advancement of Women in STEM.

A cocktail hour is built in to make sure that you have the chance to meet the speakers and connect with other fellow entrepreneurs. You’ll leave the event feeling inspired, motivated, informed, and connected
with the greater community of entrepreneurs.

IT'S A WRAP FOR TUNE IN TO YES: 200 GUESTS AND $70,000 RAISED!

On Thursday, October 24th, our annual benefit event, Tune in to YES, wowed the crowd with food and drinks from Montreal’s hottest concepts and a stunning circus presentation by Le Monastère in the incredible setting of the St Jax Montréal. Things got competitive as Andy Nulman, the host of the evening, riled the crowd up and egged on attendees competing for the best of this year's Silent Auction.

The event, chaired by Samantha Bateman of Integria Consulting with honorary co-chair Evan Bush of the Montreal Impact, raised over $70,000 to help YES continue its integral work of helping job seekers, entrepreneurs, and artists integrate into the community and contribute to the economy in Quebec.

Special thanks to St Jax Montréal, providing the perfect backdrop for the mind-blowing theatrics and circus art of Le Monastère! Also many thanks to the attendees, all of our partners, sponsors, supporters and donors, as well as our unwavering, tireless staff and volunteers!

MEET SINTHUSHA KANDIAH, RECIPIENT OF THE IRIS UNGER RECOGNITION AWARD

The Iris Unger Recognition Award recognizes artists and entrepreneurs whose project best reflects the values that Iris Unger, YES’ former Executive Director, instilled during her 18 years at YES: dedication and passion, success through hard work, and a true commitment to making a difference in the community.

Sinthusha Kandiah, Divinart Foundation founder and winner of the 2019 Iris Unger Recognition Award, uses proceeds from her henna business to give back to the community.
The first-ever Iris Unger Recognition Award was awarded at this year's Tune in to YES to Sinthusha Kandiahwhose Divinart Foundation uses proceeds from henna art to give back to marginalized populations.

Examples of her impact are her work with Chez Doris in Montreal, where she donated housing materials for newly housed women, as well as her work to provide resources for newly arrived women experiencing domestic violence. Abroad, she has donated technological tools to visually impaired students and educational institutions in Sri Lanka, and is embarking on a new micro-financing project with an organization based in India this year.

Kandiah explains “It’s always been important to me to invest in vulnerable communities. As a woman of colour and first-generation Canadian, it is essential for me to lead by example and to create a path for others pursuing non-traditional careers.”

MEET NADIA KOVALEVA AND FIND OUT HOW YES HELPED HER LAND HER DREAM JOB

Nadia Kovaleva, born and raised in Russia, arrived in Canada in 2016 to pursue her studies in web development. Three years later, armed with a Bachelor of Science from her homeland, and several college attestations in web development here in Montreal, she came to YES to gather some insight into the best practices for job seeking.

Nadia’s ultimate goal was to find a job at a big company or corporation, utilizing her education and skills in IT and web design. However, she found she didn’t have enough information about the labour market in the IT sector which, even with her skillset, left her at a disadvantage.

“I wasn’t very familiar with the specifics of the labour market in the IT sector and how my professional skills and education could be best leveraged,” Nadia says.  “I’d heard a lot of positive feedback about the work of YES, so when it came to the choice of a help center, I had no doubts about where to go first.”

Nadia actively participated in several workshops to sharpen her interview skills and optimize her social media presence. Her meetings with a YES Employment Counsellor helped her to gain focus, update her resume and guide her through all the steps of her job search.

“All the help and resources that I received from YES were extremely helpful. I felt confident and very prepared for a panel interview that I had scheduled,” she says.  “During the interview I knew exactly what I should expect and because of that, I was able to highlight my strongest skills.”

As a result, Nadia was practically hired on the spot! She landed her dream job of working in the IT department of one of the best universities in Canada!

“I couldn’t have done this so fast and easily without the help of YES!”

Congratulations Nadia!
