RECOMMENDATIONS MADE TO REVERSE HIGHER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT RATES FOR ENGLISH SPEAKERS IN QUEBEC REGIONS

A new Needs Assessment Study: Employment in the Québec Regions was developed by YES with the help of Committee for Anglophone Social Action (CASA), Megantic Community Development Corporation (MCDC), North Shore Community Alliance (NSCA), Townshippers’ Association, Voice of English-speaking Québec (VEQ), and Neighbours Regional Association of Rouyn-Noranda.  According to the report, despite having higher levels of university education than the French-speaking majority, English-speaking Quebecers still have higher unemployment rates.  Recommendations to reverse this trend include, "...Increasing resources in the regions to help with job search, creating workshops and training in English for those re-entering the job market or changing careers, offering free or low-cost French-language training, and publicizing existing English-language services,” said Iris Unger, Executive Director of YES.

A copy of the full report is available by clicking here. It includes information on the varying challenges of the different regions, and the nine recommendations.

LEARN HOW KRISTY FINDLAY AND GENEVIEVE FILY-PARÉ  LAUNCHED THEIR CLINIC WITH THE
HELP OF YES

The Centre Mosaïque de Québec is a  speech-language pathology clinic based in Quebec City founded by Geneviève Fily-Paré and Kristy Findlay.  The two are graduates from the university of Laval’s Maitrise en Orthophonie program. Having met while studying, the two women began climbing together.  Their friendship laid the groundwork for the strong future partnership Fily-Paré and Findlay would have as they started developing their idea for the clinic.

In September 2016, they opened the doors to their speech-language pathology clinic with a mission of helping families and individuals with speech and language difficulties. They offer services in French and in English, supporting bilingualism in Quebec City and its surrounding regions.

Findlay and Fily-Paré worked hard to promote speech-language pathology, communication disorders and bilingualism by offering several free workshops and information sessions and are proud to continue their commitment to families in Quebec by partnering with the Jeffrey Hale Wellness Centre this coming Fall.

The duo heard about YES through the partnership with  Voice of English Speaking Quebec (VEQ). Through a series of coaching sessions, YES focused on helping them gain more exposure through social media and build new partnerships, while balancing the daily needs of the clinic and their existing clients.

“YES has supported and helped us realise our vision, our short term planning and our long term business development.  We are so grateful for their presence in the first year of our clinic.”

Over the next year they will continue to work with YES to help them expand their clinic and the growth of their services.
