FIND OUT HOW EMMA JACOBS CHANGED HER CAREER PATH WITH THE HELP OF YES

Emma Jacobs is an American-Canadian journalist and illustrator who moved permanently to Montreal a year ago. She attended Jump Start Your Art, which introduced her to YES’ individual coaching services for artists. Since then, she has been working with the YES Artists' Business Coach to expand her work in illustration and prepare for the release of her first illustrated book, The Little(r) Museums of Paris.

According to Emma, YES was instrumental in helping her with the transition from working full-time as a journalist to making illustration a bigger part of her workload. But it didn’t come without the snags and obstacles commonly associated with a change in career path.

“The promotion required to attract new clients and promote a book had me feeling very much out of my depth,” Emma says.  “I’m also an independent, cross-disciplinary freelancer trying to figure out how to optimally structure my time and to set and prioritize my goals.”

“For someone who has been in one career for a decade, integrating into a design world I know less well can feel daunting and full of unknowns,” she continues. “My coach pushed me to take important risks and invest the needed time to get my work in front of potential clients.  She’s also been a sounding board for ideas I had but have not been sure whether to pursue. She’s a little like my work therapist and a wonderful ally in navigating new terrain. I’m also learning to navigate the world of arts funding in Canada, which is very different than in the States, where I’ve spent most of my career.”

With The Little(r) Museums of Paris coming out later this month, Emma has managed to successfully place excerpts from the book in major publications, including the New York Times.

IN MEMORIAM: DARREN INNIS

It is with much sadness that we share the sudden passing of our colleague and friend, Darren Innis on May 18, 2019.

Darren joined our team two years ago as the receptionist and later as an office assistant and quickly became a devoted and respected member of the YES family.  For the longest time, he was the face of YES and was loved by volunteers and clients alike.

His smile, dedication and good natured disposition will be deeply missed. Our deepest sympathies go out to Darren’s family and friends during this difficult time.

Darren, you will be sadly missed, always remembered. May you rest in peace.
